Historical panoramas used to offer a view of a city- or landscape - as seen from the point of view of an artist or photographer. Be it in painting, print or photography, the viewer received an often entertaining, informative and complete overview of a certain place at a certain time.

Digital media and networking have widened the scope of street, urban and landscape views to include 360” zoomable, interactive views, maps and directories - each in turn equipped with multiple options for further layers of information. Former blind spots might be rapidly disappearing in the ever more detailed complexity of available and accessible information. Furthermore the subject of individuality, the right to control, manipulate, protect and reveal personal information is challenged and hollowed out. The digital fingerprints left behind everywhere endanger our bank accounts and our privacy. In separate developments the decoding of the human gene is also leading to radical new perspectives regarding our rights to access information, questioning the individuality of humans and the way societies are organized.

Having arrived at this interchange, the artists, collectors, theoreticians and scientists participating in the symposium will present their material and ideas on the historical, current and emerging understanding of the observation, mapping and organization of different types of landscapes - beginning with historical viewing devices, the understanding and representation of landscapes (Werner Nekes) to the analysis of the genetic decoding of the individual and its social and cultural implications (Kári Stefánsson), further to an artists perspective of contemporary architecture, utopia and urban space (Marjolijn Dijkman) to the modelling, playing and interference with, as well as the questioning of, contemporary networked and mediatised societies (Michelle Teran).

WERNER NEKES
(b. 1944) lives in Mülheim an der Ruhr in Germany
Since 1965, filmmaker and media artist Werner Nekes has produced over 100 films and his work has been presented internationally at major museums and festivals.
Furthermore, Nekes has compiled one of the most important private collections of artifacts documenting 500 years of pre-cinematographic experiments as well as developments in the early history of film, focusing on spatial and temporal principles of representation.

MARJOLEIN DIJKMAN
(b. 1978) lives in Rotterdam in The Netherlands, Brussels in Belgium and Saint Mihiel in France.

Through her diverse work Dutch artist Marjolijn Dijkman often considers the foundations of how we perceive and experience our surroundings – the conventions and categories which underlie the comprehension, or not, of the world around us. Ranging from photographic archives and films, to landscape interventions and the organization of exhibitions and experimental residencies, Dijkman’s practice has concerned itself with futurology, public space, knowledge organization, cartography, utopian architecture or environmentalism, for example, with a particular emphasis on collaboration.

KÁRI STEFÁNSSON, M.D., DR. MED., Executive Chairman and President of Research
(b.1949) lives and works in Reykjavik in Iceland
Kári Stefánsson, M.D., Dr. Med. founded deCODE in August 1996. Dr. Stefánsson was previously a professor of Neurology, Neuropathology and Neuroscience at Harvard University and Director of Neuropathology at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. From 1983 to 1993, he held faculty positions in Neurology, Neuropathology and Neurosciences at the University of Chicago. Dr. Stefánsson received his M.D. and Dr. Med. from the University of Iceland and is board-certified in neurology and neuropathology in the United States. Dr. Stefansson is recognized as a leading figure in human genetics. He has shaped deCODE's scientific approach and been actively engaged in leading its gene discovery work, serving as senior author on most of the company's publications in major scientific journals.

MICHELLE TERAN
(b. 1966) lives and works in Berlin in Germany

Born in Canada, Michelle Teran explores the interaction between media and social networks in urban environments. She develops performances, with the audience often participating via the staging of urban interventions such as guided tours, walks and open-air projections, participatory installations and happenings.
One of her recent projects, Buscando al Sr. Goodbar (2009), is a threefold tour through the Spanish town Murcia simultaneously taking place by bus as well as on Google Earth and YouTube.

Michelle received the Transmediale Award 2010, the Prix Ars Electronica honorary mention (2005, 2010) as well as the Vida 8.0 Art & Artificial Life International Competition.

Still, it is necessary to keep in mind that there actually is a point of departure for both the conference and the exhibition. this is not a secret. the dynamics of the project have taken us further ...but the point of departure, which we should take into consideration is...

SHORT VERSION:Artists, that is teachers and students, from the Art Academies of Reykjavik, Vilnius, Stockholm and Bergen will be meeting for workshops in the respective cities, places, landscapes and countries to look at, study and learn, to create a dialogue, to research and develop artistic works related to the idea of the panoramic in the context of a nordic and baltic cultural, social, geographical and historical backdrop.

Concerning our approach towards the exhibition.
During our extra days in Reykjavik we, from Bergen, had a nice talk about this and made an attempt to put some things down.
In the discussion that is going on I feel that we are drifting away from the core, at least not towards it. It feels to me that we are talking about things before clarifying what we have so far.
How do we react on the subject of this program? From what or where do we work? What is the material for our work?

As we know the interests, works and approaches are very different in our group. But by answering these questions we came to one big division inside the whole group.
If we keep the intentional program of the Panoramic Interchange course as our subject we found two/three layers within our group in which we all manoeuvre.
We discussed the two ways to create a panoramic (of any kind) point of view:

Zooming in, - this could mean to grab a detailed subject in the course itself.
We thought of
Baldwin’s research on the KUNO institute
Dillans focus on view furniture
Sindri’s interest in the people participating in the course
some of us focus very much on what they seen/experienced in the course

Zooming out, - here we thought how some of us use material from outside of the course

Off course not for everyone it is so clear in what category they fit. Or maybe I don’t even want to call it categories. We just figured that this, especially in relation to creating a panorama, was a clear division to position us in.
What could we do with this?
This could be a way to divide the space, locate the works and create a theme around it. We could also see it as a general thing and work from here.
In the symposium there as well is zooming in/out a present subject (?)
I wonder what your response to this is?
We from Bergen hope to find a solution that does not need such a grand construction around one of the participants’ works (Bryndis, Dillan) and hope to let these works develop by the person itself instead of becoming the visual for the entire show.

"> In January 2010 I had an exhibition in the student gallery Kaffistofa that was titled “With or without you Bergen”. The exhibition involved a video performance that I did in relation to Edvard Grieg, the composer. When I didn't get the chance to see the Edvard Grieg museum in Bergen I decided to do my own version of it. Which involved a performance in the role of the museum director and a recreation of the museum itself. With this performance I contemplated what a place mediates, how we define it and experience it in our memories, in our imagination.

Also for this exhibition I showed a video of an oil station and played a sound piece which involves me walking up to people in Bergen and asking them the question: “What can you tell me about this place?” In this piece I work with the idea of Foucault’s heterotopia.

I continued with this performance in Vilnius and will also do in the other cities as well.

In Bergen I put postcards in random postboxes and got sent back 4 out of 10. For the exhibition I scanned them and printed out. They were in a rack in the exhibition space and people could take with them if they wanted. By doing so I kept the process continuous and open.

I got published an article about the exhibition and the project in an Icelandic newspaper, there I mention the project in general and the process:

Karcher: Wie wird dieser Palast aussehen?

Obrist: Wie ein Kristallpalast, oder wie der visionäre Fun-Palast des britischen Architekten Cedric Price. Er sollte ein Zentrum für alle Künste sein, von Theater bis Tanz. Das war auch immer mein Prinzip, die Kunst nicht zu isolieren. Sie braucht geschützte Räume, aber gleichzeitig muss man für sie Brücken bauen zu anderen Disziplinen.

Karcher: Das klingt nach der alten Idee des Gesamtkunstwerks.

Obrist: Was ich daran nicht mag, ist der totalitäre Anspruch. Heute geht es nicht mehr um Collagen und Panoramen. Sondern um Kräftefelder, um Energien.

Karcher: Welche Trends sehen Sie in der Kunst?

Obrist: Es gibt nicht mehr eine zentrale Bewegung, alles hat sich atomisiert. Ein Comeback erleben gerade Praktiken, die originäre Erfahrungen in den Mittelpunkt stellen, wie Zeichnungen und Performances. Man sucht nicht mehr Repräsentation, sondern Realität.

Karcher: Körpererfahrung statt Branding?

Immersive Digital Arena - Experimental Week, February 2010

Do you have high quality; innovative 360° based photographic, video, audio, graphic or animation material that you would like to be shown in a panoramic, immersive environment? This is an exciting opportunity to view and experiment with your work on a large scale alongside other leading panoramic and immersive artists, specialists and media professionals.

ICCI (Innovation for the Creative & Cultural Industries) at the University of Plymouth, in collaboration with Igloo Vision (www.igloovision.com) are hosting a test event in February in preparation for a large scale, week long, public event ‘IDA360’ to be held in Plymouth during October 2010, using a larger 20m diameter x 6m high 360° screen with 6.1 surround sound system.

We would like to invite potential exhibitors to contribute new and experimental work to test within a 12.5 metre diameter immersive arena in February. This test event will be held over 5 days, 15th – 19th February 2010 during which we will show work and explore the possibilities of this viewing environment. We are particularly interested in content that combines image and audio and may contain a narrative.

The material will be shown using five 1080p HD streams combined for one 360° image, run from five PC’s in sync across a network. It is also possible to project 5 standard format screens simultaneously.

At this time we are looking for:
1. One example per person; image, video or audio (video maximum duration 3 minutes, short exerts from longer videos accepted)
2. Resolution: (9600x1080) photographs or (5120 x 768 or 9600 x 1080) for video.
3. Image formats: JPEG, TIFF
4. Video formats: preferably uncompressed QuickTime movies in five separate files. For example a panoramic film made at 5210 x 768 would be sliced into five 1024 x 768 files. These will be converted onsite into the required code for the system we are using
5. If compression is necessary for video files then use Quick Time h.264 compressor, set everything to high quality, 100% and set a key frame for every frame.
6. Video should be at a frame rate: ideally 30fps but others fps acceptable.
7. Audio: stereo wav files are ideal, however you may have created a sound piece in 6.1 in which case you would need to save as 3 separate stereo Wavs. These would need to be flattened to 1) as front & left, 2) as mid & right, 3) as back & right.
8. If you have video with a stereo soundtrack and do not have the ability to extract the audio this can be completed on site.

The International Panorama Council and Culture Co., a subsidiary of the
Greater City of Istanbul, are happy to announce the 19th International
Panorama Conference 2010. The conference will take place from 16 through
18 April 2010 at Istanbul, Turkey. A post-conference tour to main
attractions of the city is scheduled on April 19. It is an honour for
IPC to be hosted in this fantastic city which is one of Europe’s 2010
Cultural Capitals.

This is to invite you to participate in the conference. We will deal
with questions of historic panorama paintings and related media forms,
with modern interpretations of panoramas and with the future of the
media. We will also focus on the future of the International Panorama
Conference as a membership association.

Nordic Panoramic Interchange addresses questions of the cultural and political history, the common as well as the divisive nature of the “nordic landscape”. Essentially it will focus on landscape and what a contemporary understanding of a panorama might be or become. Four specific countries have been chosen for their obvious topographical, ethnographical, historical and architectural differences. For example, Norway, Iceland, Vilnius and Sweden all have unique landscapes, mountains and fjords, volcanic terrain, forests and lakes then flat agricultural planes. This is the starting point offering dramatic ranges of distinction. However the aim of the project is not to deal exclusively with the obvious. The notion of landscape can be stretched to the most extreme lengths, including notions as widely apart as a media, political, financial or ecological landscapes. Looking outside of the “traditional” representation of landscape we talk of and experience the following variants.

Hardscape - landscaping the heavily urbanized and suburbanized
Mediascape - how visual media imagery impacts the work
Seascape - depictions of the sea
Softscape - flowers, plants, shrubs and trees
Soundscape - sounds and combinations of sonic immersive environments
Talkscape - socially constructed spaces of human activity
Mindscape – a space for conceptual thinking
Timescape - a space for political and historical discourse

Welcome to Nordic Panoramic Interchange

Artists, that is teachers and students, from the Art Academies of Reykjavik, Vilnius, Stockholm and Bergen will be meeting for workshops in the respective cities, places, landscapes and countries to look at, study and learn, to create a dialogue, to research and develop artistic works related to the idea of the panoramic in the context of a nordic and baltic cultural, social, geographical and historical backdrop.

The project was initiated by Lei Cox and Karen Kipphoff. At this point these artist teachers are involved: Hulda Stefansdottir from Reykjavik, Olav Westphalen from Stockholm and Karen Kipphoff from Bergen.

Nordic Panoramic Interchange is supported by KUNO, the network of 16 Fine Arts Education Institutes of Scandinavia and the Baltic Countries. Nordic panoramic Interchange will get together in Umeå this weekend, Oct.23-25th to determine the further time and workshop plan.
